Circular Economy - Solutions for Post-Consumer Waste

Circular Economy; Solutions for Post-Consumer Waste.

The fact about plastic

There is no outlet for almost 40%- 50% of the world’s waste plastic. This has sparked an urgent need across the world to discover more uses for post-consumer plastic waste. In recent years, political leaders have come together to openly discuss ways in which the world can reduce the amount of waste plastic which is ending up as landfill and or in our oceans.

The EU has since enacted new legislation to support its goals to cut waste and use more recycled materials in manufacturing of plastic products. By 2025, 50% of all products are to be made from recycled materials, increasing to 70% by 2027. (Plastics Europe)

The challenge, a circular economy.

Today, most plastics are still produced from fossil-based feedstock. Transitioning to a circular, climate neutral economy demands special investment and innovation to produce more recycled plastics contributing to the goals of the Paris and Glasgow Agreements and the EU’s 2050 climate-neutral ambition.

So, how do we re-enter mixed plastics waste into the manufacturing of plastic material?

Recycling mixed plastics has challenges, many products are made from a wide array of different polymer-based materials which are difficult to separate e.g., a bottle made from PET with a screw top made from PP or PVC. However, promising innovations in new recycling technologies have already taken off and are expected to increase the quantity and quality of recycled plastics.

Using the means of compatibilization and solid-state extrusion to pulverize mixed polymers increases recycling by blending different plastics together, and by improving the segregation and collection of plastics such as semi rigid and flexible films, the rate of recycling can be further increased.

Views ahead of k2022:

In the recent K 2022 Preview hosted by Plastic News, Ulrich Reifenhauser (A Preview of K Show) commented that many producers are not yet being asked to change their processes or products to be circular.

Take medical suppliers for instance, they use virgin resins to meet quality standards, so this question of sustainability is not a priority. However, the Circular economy is continuingly growing in other industries and this trend will impact sectors beyond single use plastic products.

There is an exciting opportunity at K 2022 for businesses to find out how their business can contribute to the circular economy.

TSM Control Systems role in a circular economy:

TSM Control Systems (TSM) unique Gravimetric Batch Blenders are now being used to drive the Circular Economy, and enabling our customers to Reduce, Reuse & Recycle more plastic materials.

Utilizing our patented reverse-flight auger mixing technology our blenders provide superior mixing homogeneity irrespective of material bulk density or material geometry that is not achievable by competitive systems.

These blenders offer plastic producers a range of additional benefits:

  • Ability to increase and maximize regrind usage
  • Improved consistency of end product production (even with varying feedstocks)
  • Reliable material blending reducing process downtime
  • Reduction in scrap rates
  • High Accuracy Dispensing up to 0.01% of batch

Utilizing our inherent versatility and capacity for innovation, we have adapted our blenders to meet the needs of the plastics industry, allowing them to use post-consumer recyclates of varying bulk densities and particle geometries while still maintaining a homogenous mix to create a sustainable and resource-efficient economy.

This year at K 2022, TSM will demonstrate how we can assist businesses in their efforts for sustainability and meeting the new regulations in plastic production.
