FAQs

What does an automatic air ring do, and how does it improve blown film production?
Automatic air ring/profile control adjusts cooling distribution around the bubble to correct thickness variation across the circumference. TSM’s automatic gauge control approach uses a measured thickness profile, maps the bubble to control zones, and then corrects deviations by adjusting cooling air volume in those zones. This typically improves film tolerance, stabilizes output, and reduces manual adjustments.
How does automatic profile or gauge control help reduce thickness variation and scrap?
It reduces variation by continuously measuring profile and correcting thickness deviations automatically, rather than relying on manual tuning. This improves repeatability during startups and changes, which is where a lot of scrap is generated. Actual scrap reduction depends on your baseline variation and tolerance band, TSM can assess expected ROI using your current data.
How much output increase can I expect with an automatic air ring?
Output improvement is application dependent. TSM literature references production increase expectations in the 10–20% range for related bubble control/IBC/cooling improvements depending on configuration and constraints. The best way to estimate this is to review your die size, resin, cooling limits, and current instability, TSM can advise a realistic target.
Can air rings, profile control and IBC systems be retrofitted to an existing blown film line?
Yes, retrofits are common, but feasibility depends on die/air ring geometry, cage/IBC space, measurement mounting, and control integration. Share your current setup (die diameter, air ring type, whether you have IBC, and available mounting space) and TSM will confirm retrofit options.
What layflat bubble width configurations can your systems support?
TSM supports width control solutions including layflat width measurement, with scanners supporting wide measurement ranges (application dependent). Supported layflat ranges depend on online geometry, cage layout and sensor type. Provide your target layflat range and die size and we’ll recommend the correct configuration.
What film thickness measurement options are available (contact, non-contact, barrier film)?
TSM supports thickness measurement using contact or non-contact options (and profile measurement can be linked to gauge control). Sensor choice depends on film structure, barrier layers, speed, and required resolution. Share your film structure and target tolerance and we’ll recommend the best measurement approach.
Will Automatic control still work with recycled content or variable resin density?
Automatic control corrects based on measured film behavior, which can help when resin properties vary. However, very high variability may require tuning of control strategy and stability measures (IBC, cooling configuration, recipe control). Share your PCR % and typical instability symptoms and TSM will confirm suitability and configuration.
Can the system integrate with my existing controls, drives or third-party equipment?
Often yes, TSM solutions are designed for integration via standard industrial communications. What’s possible depends on your drive platform, PLC architecture and the depth of integration required (setpoints only vs full supervisory control and reporting). Send your controls list and TSM will confirm compatibility.
What information do you need to quote an automatic gauge control or air ring upgrade?
At minimum: die diameter/type, film structure (layers/barrier), output range, thickness range/tolerance, target layflat range, current air ring/IBC configuration, existing measurement (if any), control platform, and photos/drawings of the bubble/cage area. With that, TSM can scope retrofit feasibility, hardware, commissioning, and expected improvement.
